This is the fourth period of Unit 1, Book 3—Nature in the balance. In this period, students will first learn about what ellipsis basically is and its function , and then summarize the general rules of ellipsis and finally apply the rules in real contexts. Each step is done in specific contexts related to environmental protection.
What
The section of Grammar and usage mainly focuses on the exploration of the general rules of ellipsis and the application of them in specific contexts concerning environmental protection. One context is a talk about a documentary on environmental protection. The other context is a passage about Jack’s experience of taking part in a forest clean-up activity.
Why
The section of Grammar and usage aims to make students know about ellipsis, a normal language phenomenon, including its definition, main function and general rules, and ultimately they will be able to use ellipsis properly in new contexts. Meanwhile, students are expected to raise their awareness of protecting the environment by exploring ellipsis in the contexts concerning environmental protection.
